What does it take to get a private pilot license?
The Federal Aviation
Administration has strict requirements for obtaining a private pilot license. You must be at least 17 years old unless you
want to limit your license to free balloons and gliders. In that case, you can
get one year early. You must have at least a current third-class medical
certificate with a less restrictive requirement for free balloon and glider
pilots. You can get your medical certificate from an FAA-authorized aviation
medical examiner. The FAA directory lists nearly 6,000 examiners nationwide.
You must obtain your medical certificate before you take any lessons. Just imagine your disappointment if you went through flight school only to find out that you have a medical condition that will prevent you from piloting an aircraft. Not to mention the cost involved in obtaining a private pilot license. If you're reading this article in its original form, you've probably already met the next requirement. You must be able to read, speak and understand the English language. English is used worldwide at airports and control towers.
Finally there are some requirements related to flying. You
must pass the FAA Private Pilot Airman Knowledge Written Exam. Ground school
will prepare you for the same along with many other tools available like books,
practice test software and videos. To obtain your private pilot license you
must log at least 40 hours of flight time which must include at least 20 hours
of flight with an FAA-authorized instructor and 10 hours of solo flight. If you
expect to be certified for night flying, you must log at least three hours a
night with a flight instructor, including at least 10 takeoffs and landings.
